On October 28, 2026, multiple newsrooms reported that work contact records for more than 41,000 U.S. Department of Homeland Security (DHS) employees and contractors had been published online. A hacktivist group claimed the data came from an Okta single sign-on (SSO) system used at DHS. TechCrunch matched some names to known employees. Wired and CyberScoop described a similar scale of exposure. Record timestamps pointed to mid-August. DHS said it was aware of a potential breach. It said it was working to address the situation. Okta said it had no evidence its own platform was compromised. How the data left DHS systems is still developing in public reporting.
SSO is the login that opens many apps with one identity. That convenience is why offices adopt it. It's also why that one account deserves stronger protection than a password alone. Directory details and group memberships can map who reaches which tools. Protecting the front door matters as much as locking each app behind it.
East Texas firms that run Microsoft 365 can tighten the same idea inside Microsoft Entra ID, the identity service behind those cloud apps. Start with phishing-resistant multi-factor authentication (MFA). Passkeys and hardware security keys beat text-message codes that can be tricked. Add Conditional Access next. A sign-in then has to look right before it opens email or files. Keep separate admin accounts for admin tasks. Don't use those accounts for day-to-day mail. Limit how long sessions and tokens stay valid after someone signs in. Watch the sign-in logs for odd locations and failed prompts. None of that requires panic. It's ordinary hygiene for an identity that unlocks the rest of the office.
