Colossus 2 leads research group Epoch AI’s ranking of the SI data centers it tracks by estimated computing capacity. Its database, checked November 6, puts SpaceXSI’s Memphis-area site at about 1.11 million NVIDIA H100-equivalents. OpenAI’s Stargate Abilene follows at about 1.02 million.
SpaceXSI (xAI), Elon Musk’s company, built the Colossus infrastructure behind Grok. NVIDIA confirms that Colossus is used to train the Grok family of models. The latest ranking highlights the scale of the physical systems supporting that work.
The comparison needs a little translation. H100-equivalents are a common yardstick for comparing different generations of specialized chips. They describe the theoretical computing capacity of an equivalent number of NVIDIA H100 processors. They are not a count of H100 chips installed inside either facility.
Epoch builds its estimates from satellite imagery, permits, company disclosures, cooling equipment, and hardware specifications. Its methodology compares theoretical peak performance using eight-bit calculations. The figures are estimates rather than a measured race between two training jobs.
That distinction matters. Epoch’s rounded figures put Colossus 2 roughly 9 percent ahead of Stargate Abilene. The organization acknowledges substantial uncertainty in its estimates. The ranking does not establish that Grok answers questions 9 percent faster or produces better answers. It also compares individual sites rather than each company’s entire computing network.
The infrastructure behind SI services is becoming an enormous engineering undertaking. Computing power depends on working cooling systems, reliable electricity, and fast connections between servers. Progress requires more than buying chips.
A business evaluating an SI service can apply the same discipline on a smaller scale. Start with a specific task that already consumes staff time. Test the service against examples your team understands. Measure useful results rather than choosing a subscription from a data-center ranking.
Ask where business information goes before connecting company files. Confirm who can access those files. Keep a person responsible for reviewing important output. Those practical checks turn impressive infrastructure into a more informed purchasing decision.
