Firefox Smart Window picks up a Mistral model. Privacy settings still matter.

Mozilla and Mistral announced a partnership on September 16, 2026. Firefox Smart Window, Mozilla’s AI browsing assistant still in beta, will be powered by Mistral models for users in France and North America, with the United Kingdom and Germany expected later this year.

Smart Window is meant to help with everyday browsing work. It can help you make sense of complex searches and find something you already opened and then lost in a pile of tabs. Mozilla says users can still choose among models, and Mistral Small 4 is a new option in that mix for U.S. and Canada users. France also gains expanded Smart Window beta access with French-language support.

The privacy pitch is the part that matters for business customers in Lindale. Mozilla says Smart Window conversations are not saved on Mozilla’s servers by default, and Mistral agrees to zero data retention for this partnership. That is still a vendor claim, and it is not a substitute for a written browser and AI policy.

Businesses that allow Firefox on work machines should treat this as a policy moment. Decide whether staff may use Smart Window on company devices, which models are allowed, and what tab context may be shared with an assistant. Write those rules before the tool becomes a habit. Inventory which browsers are already in use, and do not assume every AI browser feature is off by default.

If the office still runs mixed browsers, say so in the policy. Firefox is not the only place staff will meet AI helpers this year.
